THE HIDDEN POWER OF THE MEDIA Since the invention of the printing-machine by Gutenberg, information has been spread with great ease and speed. At the beginning of the third millennium, mass media are renowned, enormous and powerful institutions. Therefore, the may pose a dangerous instrument in hands of those, who are in power. v 90% of all world news comes from a handful of Western sources: Associated Press, Reuters, Agence France Presse. These agencies, which have proud records as news gatherers, dominate foreign news influencing the mass media all over the world. v People tend to trace the news appearing on the TV or in the press. However, most of them do this unaware of being manipulated. The media are used to divert the public opinion from the really crucial issues. The most powerful form of censorship is, as ever, by omission. v The aim is to make the public opinion feel important and able to influence the ongoing matters. But by flooding the media with unimportant items of news, people, who control the media, may induce some proper reactions from the public opinion.
