HISTORY v 1886 – country came under British control – administered as a province of Br. India v two-tier [tie: rząd,kondygnacja] administration – Ministerial Burma (economic development concentrated) and Frontier Areas (ethnic minorities) v 1920 – first, serious nationalist manifestation – student strike at Rangoon University v subsequent years – the national movement was established (Aung San) v with the II WW over – the British wanted to reimpose the old colonial system àimpossible (the nastionalists had become a well-oragnized piolitical and military force) v January 4, 1948 – independence; the first PM – former student leader U Nu v July 1947 – Aung San + six veterans of independence struggle were gunned down v the new state was plunged into civil war v Ne Win – emerged as a leader of Burmese army v On March 2, 1962, Ne Win sezied power in a coup which inaugurated more than three decades of military rule MILITARY RULE 1962-1974
· Ne Win formed a Revolutionary Council and ruled by decree. · imprisonment of Government and minority group leaders + hundreds of political activists. Within the new administration, Ne Win had total control.
