Biotechnology is concerned with manipulation of biological material. It is strictly connected with genetic engineering and genetic modification, which are its basic tools. Through the artificial insertion of genes from one organism into another, transgenic or genetically modified organisms are created. This technology allows a selected characteristic or trait (cecha) to be added to another in a newly created organism.

            Biotechnology offers significant opportunities, especially in the food production. Modern plant breeding is firmly (pewnie, mocno) based on the principals of genetic, because it allows to obtain a plant with a desirable set of characters so as to satisfy human needs better. New species can for instance be less vulnerable to parasites and illnesses, produce higher crops and of better quality and simultaneously be less susceptible(podatny) to climate conditions. Thus the benefits might be enormous and it’s no surprise that GM food is becoming more common. However biotechnology also meets many obstacles (przeszkody) on its way. Undoubtedly it has some drawbacks(wada)as its opposers claim. But it’s very questionable whether on these grounds, its development should be hampered (utrudniać).
